From an interview with a captured member of the Islamic State, few pieces of valuable information came out regarding Khilad al- Qahtani, one of the main singers / Munshes at the service of the Islamic State. Khilad was mentioned by name by Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in the last video he appeared in.
The source of the information is one of the super trusted mail carriers of the Islamic State. He was on a mission when he was caught by the Iraqi Intelligence. The man captured, was also married to the sister of the wife of Khilad al- Qahtani. His name is : Muhammad Ali Sajet al Zauba’i. The information he gave, according to the Iraqi Police, is what led to Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in Barisha / Idleb near the Syrian / Turkish borders in 2019.

He claimed:
1- Khilad al- Qahtani was killed in Hajin near Deir al Zur.
2- Khilad al-Qahtani was married to the daughter of Abu Abd Allah al Zauba’i a very trusted assistant of the Caliph Abu Bakr al Baghdad, who was also married to one of the daughters of Abu Abd Allah al- Zauba’i. The mail carrier who was captured was also married to another daughter of Abu Abd Allah al Zauba’i.

The Islamic State and / or its supporters continued their heavy usage of Twitter.com / @Twitter during the second ten days of the first month of the year 2021.
From the 10th of January till the 20th of the year 2021 Twitter.com had witnessed an hourly presence of the Islamic State and / or its supporters on the platform.
Through stolen / purchased / and or new accounts the Islamic State IS and / or its supporters managed to post on Twitter.com at will. Twitter.com managed to take most of the pro Islamic State accounts down, but not till the same accounts spread what they intended to and where new accounts kept on popping up to do the same as the ones that just got deleted always using hashtags that are popular at that moment. Of course some accounts stay without being detected.
Here are some notes on the Islamic State and Twitter: the second ten days:
1- The Islamic State and / or its supporters posted during the second ten days of the first month of 2021 using sometimes very obvious and searchable names. For example: the account posting as Akhbar al-Dawlah al-Islamiya / The News Of the Islamic State / أخبار الدوله الإسلاميه , kept on posting non stop, sometimes posting many tweets at the same time code consecutively. Which means that the accounts tweets few tweets within the same minute. Other times they used non Arabic names, mostly with stolen accounts to spread their media undetected as well.

2- The Islamic State and / or its supporters kept on posting at the tweets of major news networks that has millions of followers, like the news platforms al-Jazeera and al-Arabiyah, sometimes under the screen name al-Dawlah al-Islamiya / The Islamic State / الدولة الإسلامية .

3- The Islamic State and / or its supporters posted through Twitter.com links to exterior sites, or links that guided interested viewers to a multi web links, some on the Dark Web sometimes, while many were / are on the Surface Internet that people can access with ease.
4- When you do not find links to the Islamic State’s material, some of the “Terrorism” experts posts detail what one has missed.
During the first ten days of 2021, the Islamic State / IS has managed to use Twitter.com efficiently. On a daily basis, through the Twitter.com platform, the Islamic State has been showing and directing the public to its media platforms and that of its trusted supporters.
Twitter.com has been trying to stop the Islamic State and / or its supporters from posting to no avail. Tens of accounts are being erased daily. But, the Islamic State and / or its supporters has more accounts to use. They boast to have thousands of stolen / purchases / hacked accounts. The volume and the appearance of many -always- evolving methods followed by the Islamic State and / or its supporters are just too much to handle for Twitter.com.
During the first ten days of 2021, the Islamic State has waged attacks in many parts of the world, released a video from its branch in Sinai / ولاية سيناء / مصر / Egypt, and of course released the new issue of its newspaper al-Naba’, to name few of its activities. The news and links related all of which are to be found and was / is advertised for on Twitter.com.
It is important here to note that it is not only Twitter.com but many Surface Internet providers are used daily to disseminate the media of the Islamic State.
Another important point to take into consideration as well is the tendency of the Islamic State to spike its aggressive promotion when it produces something they deem special. For example, when the Islamic State released Nazeef al-Hamalat / نزيف الحملات on the 7th or the 8th of January / 2021, Twitter.com, was flooded by Tweets related to this video. Some of these Tweets are by the Islamic State and / or its supporters, while many others are by an array of different parties. Google.com was also swarmed by links to the video release by the Islamic State.
It took the two platforms (Google.com and Twitter.com) at least two days to suppress that key word. In the process attention was brought and caused the closure of few major pro Islamic State sites. Normally, the attention and aggressive promotion puts in the open the address of many sites. That is why someone takes them down at that point.
Of course, the pro Islamic State surface websites that gets shut down are going to reappear very soon after doing the usual procedures.

Here are some notes on the activities of the Islamic State and / or its supporters during the first ten days of 2021 on Twitter.com and to a lesser extent its activity on other platforms:
1- The Islamic State released a video from its branch in Sinai / Egypt titled Nazeef al-Hamalat / The Hemorrhage of Campaigns / نزيف الحملات in which they document their recent action in Sinai / Egypt, as well as tell the world what is their latest message.

2- The Islamic State let the world know about its latest Isdar / release through many Surface Web open platforms like Google.com, Facebook.com and Youtube.com. It was not only Twitter.com that was used by the Islamic State, but many large platforms.

3- Many Twitter.com accounts with connection to what goes on in Syria / Iraq / Jihad / Islam/ Middle East started talking about the latest video release by the Islamic State. Some like @CalibreObscura who started a thread giving a play by play description and what type of weapons do appear in the video.
Calibre Obscura wrote about the new home made weapon that appeared in the video extensively as well.

4- The Islamic State, of course, made sure to post its latest news on the Twitter feeds of many news outlets. They did the same and posted at experts on Islamic Jihadi movements. Some Tweets stayed for long hours and of course some may still be there days later. The Islamic State and / or its supporters posted aggressively on Tweets by al-Jazeera, @AlArabiya and @Orient to name few.
5- The aggressive promotion paid and more than three thousands saw the video release within few hours on one popular pro Islamic State Surface net website. Comments started piling up as well praising the release, the Islamic State and directing willing viewers to more similar content.
6- On the 11th of January 2021, Tweets by the Islamic State and / or its supporters were still the top Tweet appearing when one searches using the key word : ” Islamic State / الدوله الاسلاميه in ‘Arabic. Note that it had stayed for hours generating thousands of views plus directing traffic.
For those who have been following the media of the Islamic State / IS for the last ten years or so, Twitter.com again was in 2020 one of its favored platforms used to disseminate its media. In many instances during 2020 the Islamic State boasted about the inability of Twitter.com to stop them.
Results from few searches during different hours on the first and second days of 2021 show that Twitter.com will be facing the same major challenge when dealing with the media of the Islamic State and those pushing it.
Not all of the Islamic State efforts are on the Dark Web or the Deep Dark Web, but are rampant right on the Surface Internet or Surface Web; i.e: the web that is available to everyone in the open using the biggest platforms around.
Since day one, the Islamic State in its current form, or any other one from its past, it never forsaken the Surface Web. Yes, they operate some secret chat rooms on Telegram or somewhere else, but, the group never stopped putting material in a very easy manner for anyone to be able to see.

It is hard to get to the desired location on the Dark Web uninvited. Many people also do not do so because they fear the consequences. The Islamic State takes all of this into consideration and that is why they put their material on the everyday web platforms you encounter casually plus they are adamant on teaching their followers and supporters how to cover their traces as well. The Islamic State knows that most people are Not on the Dark Web or the Deep Dark Web, and therefore designates a huge part of its efforts to reach people on the most common platforms one encounters daily. Twitter.com is an example of a platform that the Islamic State uses to publish its news and to direct traffic into its other media platforms and those of its trusted supporters.
During the year 2020 pro Islamic State Twitter accounts relentlessly appeared daily. An avalanche of new, old and stolen accounts streamed non-stop material and directed people to more Islamic State produced material.
Here are some notes regarding the Islamic State‘s presence on Twitter.com in 2020 and what to expect in 2021.
1- On the first day of 2021, when searching Twitter.com using the key word ” Islamic State” in ‘Arabic الدوله الاسلاميه , the top result is none other than a twitter account named : Akhbar al-Dawlah al-Islamiyah / The News of The Islamic State / أخبار الدولة الإسلامية . The tweet remained the top result for more than a day. It was published in 2020 and carried on to 2021 an indication of things to come.
2- On the second day of 2021 the same Twitter account Akhbar al-Dawlah al-Islamiyah / أخبار الدولة الإسلامية is still the top tweet that appears when searching using the word : al-Dawlah al-Islamiyah / الدوله الإسلاميه in Arabic. Some of these tweets gets thousands of views already and of course links to more Islamic State’s content.
3- On the second day of 2021 the Twitter account Akhbar al-Dawlah al-Islamiyah / أخبار الدولة الإسلامية has dominated the top spot when searching the key word the Islamic State / al-Dawlah al-Islamiyah / الدوله الاسلاميه . It has seven of the first ten tweets. At one moment on 1/1/2021 the same account had about 20 consecutive tweets uninterrupted. They flooded the platform through different account at that moment in the afternoon. The Islamic State and / or / its supporters had many accounts posting at the same time at that moment. Some of the tweets were posted few days ago by now.
4- On 1/1/2021 some of the Twitter accounts linked to the Islamic State and its supporters continued with their habit of posting on the platforms of terrorism specialists.
Wassim Nasr is the terrorism specialist for France 24. The Islamic State linked him through a Tweet to its latest issue of its weekly newspaper al-Naba’/ النبأ
The Islamic State and / or / its supporters have been going directly to those in the media speaking about them and link them to their original sources without any intermediaries. They have done this in 2020 on numerous occasion and obviously are intent on continuing to do so.
6- Some of the Twitter accounts flooding the platform started putting links to other website linked to the Islamic State. Some of them tweeted only once with new accounts established on Twitter.com in 2021.
8- Some accounts advertised for the links they contain. They wrote in ‘Arabic that there is a link within the Twitter profile of the Twitter account that is posting this. The hashtags are of course what is popular during this time of the year.
8- You will see the link right away in the Twitter account’s profile.
9- When you follow the link you just found embedded in the Tweet mentioned above, you are led to a Dark Web site,or a site on the Surface web where you can download with ease the latest issue of al-Naba’ Newspaper or listen / download the latest speech by Abu Hamza al-Qurashi the current official spokesperson of the Islamic State IS.
10- Or you get to link to the new photo journal the Islamic State started releasing . And if you have any questions, there is a link to the Telegram account.
11- The hashtags in the Tweets by the Islamic State / and / or / its supporters ARE the most popular ones at this time of the Tweet in the Middle East. The hashtags used in the Tweet bellow, for example, has a Syrian Director, Hatem Ali, who just died, Qasem Sulaymani, Corona and 2021, to mention a few.
12- Some of the above mentioned Twitter accounts used also started posting on accounts that has millions of followers on the first day of 2021. The Islamic State and its supporters use this method frequently reaching millions through a single tweet posted a very popular platform. Like Turki Alalshikh / تركي الشيخ , a Saudi Royal Court Advisor with 4 Million followers, and
9- All of the pro Islamic State tweets remained on Twitter.com for hours. Some for more than a day or days.
By releasing the names of those behind its songs, the Islamic State answered a very important question about Abu Hajar al-Hadrami / Ghaleb Ahmad Baqa’iti, the Yemeni known singer / Munshed.
The Islamic State IS does not consider Abu Hajar al-Hadrami as one of its own singers / Munsheds like it does see Abu Hamza or Khilad al-Qahtani.
During his life time, Abu Hajar al-Hadrami had travelled to many places amongst which was Syria, where he met many groups, amongst which was the Islamic State. This meeting and videos of him singing along Maher Mish’al and other known Islamic State members, made people think that he was really a member of the Islamic State. There were many claims online that he had sworn al-Bay’ah to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi the leader of the Islamic State then.
Abu Hajar al-Hadrami even have a song entitled bu Bakr ya Baghdadi.
Now, when his name is not being mentioned on the audio platforms run by the Islamic State or its supporters, one is forced to trace why he is not being mentioned after all of the media claims of him doing so? Why after all of this publicity Abu Hajar al-Hadrami is not considered one of those responsible for the top Nasheeds of the Islamic State IS, or its previous banner: the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS.
Here are some notes on why the Islamic State would distance itself from Abu Hajar al-Hadrami:
1- Abu Hajar al-Hadrami was killed in al-Yemen by a drone strike while in the port of al-Mukalla, the city where he was born in 1986. He was not killed in Syria or al-Iraq, although he was there not too long ago as evidenced by the infamous Ya-Asib al-Ra’s Wennak video singing with Maher Misha’al and others. It looked that he was in Syria as a tour to see what is going on.
2- It was al-Qa’eda and not is rival the Islamic State that spoke about Abu Hajar al-Hadrami as one of its own after his death. Mu’assasat al-Malahem مؤسسة الملاحم issued a video titled Asrar wa-Akhtar wa-Raheel Akhyar أسرار وأخطار ورحيل أخيار in 2018. In the Isdar a spy confessed into giving information about Abu Hajar al-Hadram that led to drone strike. On the other hand, the Islamic State had released a special video to eulogize Maher Mish’al after his death!
3- Abu Hajar al-Hadrami sang the same song/ Nasheed for al-Nusra and the Islamic State. Salami Ala al-Dawla سلامي على الدولة is his song celebrating the Islamic State and Salami Ala al-Nusra سلامي على النصرة is the one dedicated to al-Nusra. (Note there is also a version of this Nasheed dedicated to Taliban: Salami ….Taliban)
4- Abu Hajar al-Hadrami sang for the Syrian anti Assad movement. He is celebrated by the movement, which as everyone knows, does not have an overall good relations with the Islamic State or its previous brand the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa-al-Sham. His songs were used in videos by some Syrian opposition groups something that would anger the Islamic State of course, that would not let anyone use its songs/ Nasheeds.
5- Abu Hajar al-Hadrami had a song/nasheed derived from a famous poem by the secular Palestinian world known poet Mahmud Darwish. Of course, the Islamic State and its brand of ideology would not take the lyrics of a well known secular poet and make it into a Nasheed. The Islamic State’s produced Nasheeds have certain aspects in its lyrics that has to be met.
Khilad al-Qahtani’s identity was guarded well by the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS and later the Islamic State IS till his death in al-Baghuz. His importance stems from the mega hits he voiced and how much they are used. These hits appear daily on audio platforms and of course seem along visuals through the recurring Isdarat.
Like the case of Abu Yaser and Salil al-Sawarem, some of Khilad al-Qahtani‘s most important Nasheeds were attributed to others, like the case of Lana al-Murhafatu. Some claimed erroneously that Abu ‘Abd al Malek is the singer of Lana al-Murhafatu.

Khilad al-Qahtani خلاد القحطاني is one of the three top singers/ Munsheds of the Islamic State. Of course not that much is known about him by design , except for few things. First, from his name you know that he is from the Arabian Peninsula. Secondly, in his last video appearance before his death, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi mentioned Khilad al-Qahtani by name and said that he was killed in al-Baghuz, the location on the Syrian-Iraqi border that witnessed a very important battle. To be mentioned by al-Baghdadi himself is an indication of the importance of Khilad al-Qahtani to the work of the Islamic State.
Khilad’s Nasheeds are heavily used in audio platforms and visual releases. Some of his nasheeds came at the height of the power of the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa al-Sham ISIS. Mass executions in some video released by the Islamic State were seen all around the world with Khiald al-Qahtani top hits, like Qariban Qariban قريبا قريبا and Lana al-Murhafatuلنا المرهفات in the back ground.

This Nasheed appears in tens of visual releases by the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS and by the Islamic State IS. It is also translated into other languages. The writer is unknown so far.

This Nasheed appeared when the Islamic StateIS was leading hoards of captured people to their death. It is also translated into many different languages, like a known French version.

Abu Yaser is one of the top three singers the Islamic State has. He is responsible for many major hits produced by Ajnad and used all over the visual releases by that group.
His songs fluctuate between high energy sword rattling Nasheeds to Mawwals accompanying a very solemn moment, or celebrating moments of peace.
He is responsible for at least twenty hits for the Islamic State.
Unlike the other two top singers/ Mnsheds Abu Hamza and Khilad al-Qahtani, Abu Yaser was known before he joined the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS, as evidenced by the tweets regarding that event.

Salil al-Sawarem is probably the most known Nasheed in the world because of many factors one of which is the huge number of renditions and remixes done for this Nasheed.
It is also the name of a video series of releases by the Islamic State in al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS.
The video series was released during the early important days of brand building and for sure it played a huge part into constructing the image we have in the world today of the Islamic State. The importance of this Nasheed is not to be neglected.

حامت صنوف الموت في أرتالهم *** قد أنشبت أنيابها لن تبرداءَ عاثت بقطعان العداء أسادُنا *** لما دعا الداعي إلى سَاحَ الفداءَ فأنظر بقاياهم غذت أمثولة *** وأسمع أنيناً جاب أرجاء المدىَ
جابت بهم هوج البلايا جولةٌ *** لم تبقي في سمع المداء إلا الصدىَ صالة عليهم واستدارت حولهم *** صاروا حصيداً في البراريهم مدىَ تغضا الضواري من حشاشة العداءَ *** حتى سقيناها النجَيع الأسودَا أكبرت نفساً لا تراء من عزة *** إلا بساحات الوغى ترجوا الهدىَ
تأتي حياض الموت يحدوها الضما *** تبغي بظل المرهفات الموردةَ تشتاق أن تلقى المنى في ميتتاً *** تسموا إلى العقبى وترجوا الاسودادَ
هامت بحور العين في جناتها *** ترجوا بها عيش كريماً سرمدا ياواهب لله روحاً حرةً *** جوداً وإقداماً تروموا الموعدا
ماضي إلى أعلى الأماني ذروةً *** قد سار يشدوها حثيثاً منشدا لبى وأبلى لم يحد عن غاية *** قد صاغ من هول المنايا مولدا
سل عنه ساحات الوغى حتى تراءَ *** جمع الأعادي في نواحيَها سوداءَ قد أقسم الأبطال ألا يقعدوا *** حتى يكون الدين قد عَمَ المدىَ

قال ماكنت لارضى عيش ذل بين اهلي **** بلغوا عني عزائي نصري للدين مقدم
والتقى الصفان زحفاً ورأى ظل المنون **** فمشى مشية كبر مرهباً ذات القرون
صالا في الحرب وجالا مسعر الحرب الزبون **** اشبع الاعداء قتلاً فاتحاً أعتى الحصون
ورأى الحور مناماً مشرقات الوجه تبسم **** سر بالبشرى وهش كم للقيا الحور أقدم
سقط الليث شهيداً بعد أن حز وهشم **** كل من لاقى من الكفار كالموت المحتم
8- Lastu Arda al-Maqam لست أرضى المقام

9- Qadd Tasama قد تسامى
قد تسامى واستطال* وذرى الامجاد طال ما تولى ما توانىباذلا نفسا ومالا طار للهيجا شهابا يلهب الارض اشتعالا في غبار الحرب يبدومثل بدر يتلالا جرد السيف وصالكبر الله وجال مسرجا خيل جهاديملأ الدنيا صيالا يأقتحام وانغماسمزق الاعداء حاللا قائدا للزحف يمضيموكب النور تتالى حرم الخصر بنار يمتطي الصلب مجالا في جموع غارقاتالهب الساح اشتعالا اثرا من بعد عينغادر الجمع حثالا ما نجا منهم جبانكلهم فيها استحال يا لكم جندا اباة حبذا القوم رجالا حبذا الجند غيارىوأسود وشبالا معشر طابوا خلالاواقتداء وامتثالا عانقوا الموت فنالوا*جنة الخلد منالا
As we mentioned in part 1 of this article series about Nasheed history, the Islamic State has been releasing the names of its singers on a couple of its live streaming audio platforms. The names also appear in few other websites that support the Islamic State.

This is a new policy, because since its inception, under different names, the Islamic State had always shrouded their media operation with a high level of secrecy.
There was an exception with the case of Maher Mish’al ماهر مشعل , who, when he joined the Islamic State in al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS then, did have tons of followers and a large presence on social media. After his death, the Islamic State stopped, till recently letting people know that much about its media men.
Here are more findings from this change of policy:
1- The trio: Khilad al-Qahtani خلاد القحطاني , Abu Yaser أبو ياسر and Abu Hamza أبو حمزة are responsible for around twenty major hits each.
Khilad al-Qahtani was killed in al-Baghuz Syria, while Abu Hamza is the current spokesperson of the Islamic State.
Abu Hamza voices the audio releases of the Islamic State currently.
As for Abu Yaser، not that much is known about him, but when he joined the Islamic State it was reported heavily on Twitter.
Once he is mentioned as Muhammad al-Rashed. The link leads to his Nasheeds.
2- Maher Mish’al has only three major songs that are used heavily in videos. One of them, Ya Dawlata al-Islam Nawarti al-Dunna يادولة الإسلام نورت الدنا was kind of the Islamic State’s anthem when it morphed from the Islamic State of al-Iraq wa-al-Sham ISIS into The Islamic State IS. That happened exactly when they broke the Sykes-Picot borders between modern day Syria and modern day Iraq.
His other two very used songs are Sawfa namdi lil ma’ali سوف نمضي للمعالي and Ji’na Jundan Lil-lah جئنا جنداً لله
3- Abu Hajar al-Hadrami أبو هاجر الحضرمي is absent from the list. Many have claimed that he is one of the singers/ Munsheds of the Islamic State. So far, the Islamic State did not post his name with songs that are known to be his like Lanibali oil-A’adi. لانبالي بالأعادي
So far, none of the audio platforms run by the Islamic State or its supporters, have put up his name yet.
Sometimes his song La nibali bil-a’adi is played on al-Fajr, but no name is attached to it. Many media outlets claimed that he was the singer of Salil al-Sawarem صليل الصوارم. In fact, it is Abu Yaser أبو ياسر who is the singer of Salil al-Sawarem. Abu Hajar al-Hadrami appeared in few video with Maher Misha’l ماهر مشعل and probably Abu ‘Usama al-Tunisi أبو أسامة التونسي another Ajnad singer.
4- Abu ‘Usama al-Tunis أبو أسامة التونسي is responsible for three major hits. His songs appear in many video releases by the Islamic State and they are played a lot on their radio.
Bellow are the names of the three songs. Mawkeb al-Nur موكب النور was used in many releases. when ISIS became IS in 2014. The other two Nasheeds are used with war footage mostly.

Changing its policy, the Islamic State has started putting the names of those behind their very well known songs/ Nasheeds. For years people have been left to guess who is behind these anthems that are fundamental in building the Islamic State brand.
Since the death of Maher Mish’al in July 2015, not that much have been published in the official releases of the Islamic State about the identity of their singers/ Munsheds.
Now, one can see the names of the singers/ Munsheds on some of the platforms run by the Islamic State, or its trusted supporters.
From this policy change here are some of the main findings so far:
1- The current spokesperson of the Islamic State Abu Hamza al-Qurashi, is also the same Abu Hamza the Singer/ Munshed. He is responsible for some of the biggest hits, like Kalama Qalabtu tarfi, and Hayya Inghames and Ya Quluban min Hadiden to name a few
2- Other than Abu Hamza al-Qurashi the two most used Munsheds are Khilad al-Qahtani and Abu Yaser. These two men are responsible for tens of the well known releases by Ajnad.
3- Khilad al-Qahtani is the one behind the mega hits Lana al-Murhafatu and Qariban Qariban, two of the most well known nasheeds. He is mentioned by name by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in his last appearance before his death because of his contributions.
4- Abu Yaser is the real singer of Salil al-Sawaren. Many media platforms claimed others to be behind that super Jihadi Anthem.
5- Maher Mish’al did not produce that many hits although he was one of the most, if not the most visible singer to ever produce for the Islamic State. He has only a couple of Nasheeds that are used by the Islamic State in its releases.
6- Abu al-Hasan al-Muhajer, the second spokesperson for the Islamic State did also produce few Nasheeds. He has a couple, not that many, that are used frequently by the Islamic State.
